My Weekly Rant

I am so incredibly tired of book blurbs or descriptions describing the main character as unexpectedly drawn to another character.  No matter how it's said or described, I'm over it!  If I see that character "oblivious" was suddenly drawn to character "God-like gorgeous", I'm not inclined to read the book.  I might have been about 3 years ago.  I am much wiser, not older mind you, just wiser.  Reality is that yes we might find someone attractive right away, but it doesn't mean we're instantly in love with them!  If we are, well, we have "other" issues.  Seriously!  It took me at least a few months to know I was "into" my husband.
I've seen guys who are H-O-T hot, but the second they open their mouth, can I get a muzzle please?!  Am I a sucker for a man calling me "darlin'"?  Um...well yah.  But I digress.  A believable relationship takes time to develop.  The last few books I've really enjoyed had situations where the characters didn't even like each other at first.  So, if you're an author reading this, no disrespect intended.  However, take note.  Even in the paranormal genre some of us like our characters to be realistic.

  1. THANK YOU so much for posting this! People (especially writers) are often drawn to the conclusion that love at first sight exists. The thing is, it doesn't...being attracted to someone is SO much different than being in love with them. I'm looking for books that describe a realistic relationship.

  2. So I should not write my life story is what you are saying? The time to develop my relationship with my spouse took all of a few seconds. :) From the moment our eyes locked on our second meeting we were never apart. Because on our first meeting he would not even talk to me, but when he finally looked at me he could not take his eyes of my H.O.T. body! It can't happen for everyone, only the gifted like myself. LOVE YA!

  3. I agree, there has to be lots more to a story than whether someone is attracted to another... You are my visit for today!!!

  4. A weekly rant is such a good idea. I generally just go on a tangent in my review. haha.

I, too, am so completely sick of the girls always going for the mysterious, hot n sexy one, instead of the funny, smart, nerdy one.

One series I enjoyed book one of overthrew this usual plot line, but I've heard that in book two she goes for mister perfect. NOOOOOOOOO!

Thanks for stopping by A Reader of Fictions!

  5. Amen and thank you! I agree. You don't truly fall in love with someone until you get to know them - if it's "love at first sight" its more likely just lust! (smile)

  8. I LOVE RANTS!! I agree. I can't stand a book that the second they see each other they are in love. It's totally annoying and no way near even believable in my eyes. I totally hate and think authors need to re-think that aspect ESPECIALLY in teen books. What are they trying to tell our kids? That you must love the person at first sight...GIVE ME A BREAK...

    Ok now I ranted...
    LOL sorry..

  9. This is so good!! I agree. I like what Margo said about how a lot of times it's just lust, but that's going to wear off after awhile once you're married, and that's why we have so many broken marriages. People need to build a better foundation on their relationships before they commit to spending a lifetime together. Thanks for sharing this rant : )

  10. That is interesting, the series I write in the Paranormal genre will lead into life after the romance, so it was good to read your comments. Book Two should be published early August, with luck!

  11. I can truly appreciate what you're saying because there are several books that I really enjoyed reading, but had to suspend some belief on how quickly matters progressed. I'm okay with instant attraction, but for me to really enjoy the story that attraction needs to grow into something more.

Haha! We ask so much of authors. We don't want insta-love, but we do want them to get to the point so its not boring.

    Good interest topic, thanks!

  12. I don't know if I believe in love at first sight or not. What I do know is that your rant had me cracking up... "I've seen guys who are H-O-T hot, but the second they open their mouth, can I get a muzzle please?!"... I came very close to spraying a mouth full of water onto my laptop. I am pleading with puppy dog eyes for rants on a weekly basis. That's some good stuff right there...

  13. LOL, I really enjoyed this rant. And I totally agree with you! The insta-love in most YA books is getting really annoying and I do like it when in the beginning, they are enemies ;)

  14. Amen. Sister. And a thankyouverymuch! Maybe if more people complain about the absolutely gag-worthy YA phenomenon of "insta-love", authors wil GET. THE. PICTURE. It is just not okay. I am almost 30 so it is easy for me to laugh it off and know that it just isn't possible to truly love someone in 2.4 seconds. I worry about the truly YA readers who read these stories and think that's how it is supposed to be. I would hate them to stick with someone they "insta-loved" because they think that is the end all be all of relationships. They need to know that true love takes time, ups and downs and all arounds to truly achieve and even then it isn't always gobstoppers and cupcakes. I don't know. Just, thank you. Thank you!

  16. So, true! Very few of my keeper books are love at first sight books.

  17. Sadly, books fall into the cliches as film and television. We often don't think of novel being cliche because we're reading. We inherently think reading is better and more productive than watching film or television. Not always.

  18. As a guy, I hope you understand how much worse this is! Especially, if I see it in a fantasy novel!
