Review: Daughter of the Earth & Sky by Kaitlin Bevis

Description and image from goodreads.com
Review copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for my honest review.

Some vows can never be broken.

Persephone thought she could go back to her normal life after returning from the Underworld. She was wrong.
The goddess Aphrodite is born among the waves with more charm than she can control. Zeus is stalking Persephone and her loved ones, and Thanatos is no longer content with Persephone’s silence.

He wants her soul.

Persephone can’t tell anyone about Thanatos’ betrayal, and it drives a wedge between her and Hades. Her mother is still keeping secrets, and Melissa’s jealousy of Aphrodite threatens to tear their friendship apart.
Alone, Persephone turns to a human boy for comfort. But will their relationship put him in danger?
Sacrifices must be made, and Persephone must choose between her human life and her responsibilities as a goddess. If she doesn’t, she could lose them both.
But will either life be worth choosing once Zeus is through with her?

My Thoughts:
This book was STUPENDOUS!!  I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish, which I haven’t done in quite a while.  The story picks up a few months where Persephone (Daughters of Zeus #1) ended.  Persephone is still struggling with her promise to Thanatos and it’s taking its toll on her entire life.  I completely sympathized with her.  I could understand her feelings of betrayal from her mother’s deception, as well as, the guilt she carried from her own secret she was keeping from Hades.  Then Aphrodite, with nuclear powered charm, shows up on a beach adding to the chaos.  Fighting with her mom and best friend Melissa, growing distant from Hades and being tortured on a daily basis; it’s no wonder she turned to the distraction Joel could provide.  Something that really struck me was the complexity of emotions from the other Gods.  While they wanted to stop Zeus and his insidious plan, they still felt grateful for getting them out from under the Titans’ rule.   The more I get into this series the more I love Hades!  He’s loyal and caring, but he can be cruel and vengeful.  He’s not perfect and that’s what attracts me.  This story is like a Gobstopper candy.  It has so many delicious flavors!

Review: Rapunzel Untangled by Cindy C. Bennett

Rapunzel Untangled
Rapunzel is not your average teenager. For one thing, she has a serious illness that keeps her inside the mysterious Gothel Mansion. And for another, her hair is 15 feet long. Not to mention that she’s also the key to ultimately saving the world from certain destruction. But then she meets a boy named Fane, who changes all she has ever known, and she decides to risk everything familiar to find out who she really is. Filled with romance, adventure, and mystery, Rapunzel Untangled is one story you won’t want to put down. Discover the true meaning of love and friendship in this modern twist to the classic fairytale.

My Thoughts:

Wow!  Ok, understatement of the year, I know!  Words escape me on how much I enjoyed this book.  This is such an amazing twist on the fairy tale most of us have grown up with.  The modernism makes the book easier to relate to.  I love the darker aspect of the book when it came to how demented Gothel was.  Cindy C. Bennett continues to write characters and stories that leave me enraptured.  She knows how to tell a great story that’s suitable for young and mature readers.  Rapunzel isn't your typical damsel in distress either.  Once she figures out her circumstances she takes control of her own destiny.  Then you have Fane.  Who wouldn't fall in love with Fab Fane?!  He’s caring and funny.  If you’re like me, and have loved the new faces authors are giving those old fairy tales, you will love this story!  I would also recommend reading ALL of Cindy’s other books.  She is such a phenomenal author.

I just loved the book – loved it. Hated putting it down and hated finishing it. Karey White is my new Maeve Binchy, her writing as warm as the bakery her novel is set in. For What It’s Worth surprised me, made me smile, say “no” out loud in a public place. I love when a character feels like my sister. I didn’t want to finish it, so now I may try the recipes that began every chapter.
—Amanda Dickson, author and radio personality

This book oozes charm, romance, and mouth-watering recipes. If you want to escape reality and curl up with a darling story, For What It’s Worth is the perfect fit. Thank you, Karey White!
—Rachael Anderson, author

This is a book worth every penny of the price. In the business of baking wedding cakes, every detail must be perfection, but this story remembers that real life is oh-so-messy. White’s clear and honest writing left me hungry for good food, a close family, and a little romance. A beautiful marriage of food, family, and faith.

Guest Post:
I asked Karey the following and here's what she gave me.

If your book were made into a movie, tell me...
The cast (who would play who)
What would be the scene you'd want to see the most?
What would be some of the songs on the soundtrack?

Would change anything for the movie adaptation?

Abby Benson - Emma Stone
She's cute without being too beautiful. She seems capable of playing Abby's mix of insecurity and bravery.
Dane - Oliver Jackson-Cohen
He's tall (6'3") and has good eyes and a good smile. I'd want someone attractive but manly. Not a pretty guy. He looks strong enough to play a man who builds for a living.
Kate (Abby's older sister and best friend) - Marguerite Moreau

Evan (Abby's older brother) - Matthew Atkinson
Nicole (Evan's girlfriend/fiance) - Rooney Mara

April (Bakery employee/friend) - AnnaSophia Robb

Lara (Bakery employee/friend) - Mary Elizabeth Winstead

The scene I'd look forward to the most would probably by the birthday party and fight. It's so full of frustration and passion.

Fantastic right?!!

My Thoughts:
This was a very sweet and easy read. I really enjoyed all the recipes and I found some I am anxious to try. This story made me think a lot about what things are worth and how that worth differs from person to person. I liked that the characters focused on family, religion and being good people. The description of the cakes was fantastic! I would loved to see pictures of them. This book can be read by 12 & up. There was no sexual content or bad language.

Cover Reveal: Daughter of the Earth & Sky by Kaitlin Bevis

Some vows can never be broken.

Persephone thought she could go back to her normal life after returning from the Underworld. She was wrong.

The goddess Aphrodite is born among the waves with more charm than she can control. Zeus is stalking Persephone and her loved ones, and Thanatos is no longer content with Persephone's silence.

He wants her soul.

Persephone can't tell anyone about Thanatos' betrayal, and it drives a wedge between her and Hades. Her mother is still keeping secrets, and Melissa's jealousy of Aphrodite threatens to tear their friendship apart.

Alone, Persephone turns to a human boy for comfort. But will their relationship put him in danger?

Sacrifices must be made, and Persephone must choose between her human life and her responsibilities as a goddess. If she doesn't, she could lose them both.

But will either life be worth choosing once Zeus is through with her?

Excerpt:

I'd been here before. My bare feet glided over the leaf-strewn path, unharmed by the rocks and twigs crunching beneath me. Massive live oaks draped with Spanish moss created a canopy above me, transforming the forest path into a tunnel of speckled sunlight. The air was heavy with humidity. The moist heat pressed against my skin and stole the breath from my lungs. By the time I reached the path’s end, my Eeyore nightshirt clung to my skin.
"Dungeoness." I came to a halt when I recognized the sprawling ruins of the ancient ivy-covered brick and stone manor.
Athens Academy took my class on a week-long trip to Georgia's coastal islands freshmen year. Cumberland Island was a major highlight because of the sea turtles, wild horses, and these ruins.
"Good job, Persephone,” I muttered, kicking at a branch. “You’ve figured out where you are, but how did you get here?"  I knelt to pick up a smooth, white stone, tucking damp tendrils of hair behind my ears so I could see better. The rock looked and felt real. I ran my hand over the smooth stone, turning it over and tracing the shape. The weight of it in my hand reassured me.
I turned, hoping the path held some answers, but it was no longer there. I stood on the grass-covered shoreline looking out to sea. In the distance, a girl stood thigh high in the ocean, clad in a gown of strategically placed sea foam.  Although her back was to me, I could tell she was perfect. The curly ringlets of hair cascading down her flawless cream skin matched the intense orange of the sky as the sun sank in the sea.
I glanced down at my sun-kissed skin, self-conscious. She was really pretty. A movement caught my attention and I glanced up as she looked over her shoulder, aquamarine eyes meeting mine. Then she spoke. I was shocked to hear Boreas' cold voice roll off her tongue. "Zeus lives."
I stumbled backward. Boreas, the god of winter. My mind flashed back to that horrible day in the clearing last winter. Boreas’ cold laughter. His fingers digging in my hair as he pulled me across the frozen ground. Melissa’s eyes widening as she choked on her last breath. The rush of power that gave me the strength to put Death himself, and Boreas, under my control.
A soul for a soul. I’d bargained with Thanatos, the god of death, and killed Boreas without a second thought, saving my best friend.
Now images shoved their way through my thoughts: Cumberland Island, two sunsets, lightning cracking in the sky. My mind screamed against the onslaught.  I gritted my teeth and forced myself to think the word that would make it all stop.
I bolted up in bed with a gasp. A weight in my hand made me look down. I unclenched my fist, revealing the white stone from Dungeoness.

Coming December 21, 2012

This is the second book in the Daughters of Zeus series.  I really enjoyed the first one Persephone.  I can't wait to read this one.  Read yourself happy my friends!!

Gilded Wings: The Angel Chronicles, Book 2

The Beloved Angel-Warrior Team from Until Next Time Returns!

When Matt and Emily are sent on their second mission they have no idea how truly dark human nature can become...

Emily never wanted to face humans again. With the heartache that went on down below, she’s still trying to figure out how to save souls that don’t deserve saving. The only one she wants to see again is Jason - the young man she fell in love with who became the soulmate she simply can’t forget...

Matt was trained to protect and defend the souls down below. Longing to feel the heartfelt emotions that come from being human, Matt wants nothing more than to have just one life - one chance - to live and love the girl of his dreams...

The powerful team find themselves in a brand new century, living in the Gilded Age of New York City. Emily takes over the body of Anya, a young Russian girl who arrives on Ellis Island after a hideous tragedy. There she meets up with a strangely familiar young man by the name of Drew Parrish, who helps Anya survive in an unknown world of luxury, snobbery and…obsession.

What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Once a quiet and kind boy, he’s now part of the ‘Four Hundred Club,’ and wants nothing more than to be among the most admired as he climbs the shaky ladder of society’s elite.

As two worlds merge, Emily and Matt struggle under the weight of their “Gilded Wings.” Not only will they have to figure out who they should fight to save, but they must also face a romantic choice that could destroy them both.

Excerpt:
Drew smiled. “Huh, I like that. Well...we should go.”

Anya grabbed him, “Mister, um?”

“Parrish. Drew Parrish.” He looked down at the graceful hand circling his wrist.

She could feel her face begin to burn with embarrassment as she pulled away and straightened her skirt. “Mr. Parrish.”

“Drew.” His deep voice seemed to enter her ears like a thrilling whisper.

“Drew.” She let out a sigh, trying to shake the strange feeling from her body. “Are you sure this home you’re taking us to—this household—will understand our special...situation?”

Drew stuck his hands in his pockets. “I’ve sent a messenger ahead. Mr. Carrow is very excited to meet his new governess and her ward. I told him the truth about your relationship with Gregori and how it came to be, Anya. But, please don’t worry. He’s a wonderful man and wanted to help you both very much. He helped me when I first came here. You’ll never meet a nicer family.”

“And...the lady of the house,” Anya continued. “How does she feel about our coming?”

Well, I can NOT wait to read this one!!  And now a tid-bit from the amazing author.

Who Would You Like to Have Dinner With - Past & Present?

Okay, ladies, this one’s for you…

We’re going to do breakfast, lunch AND Dinner on this one just to fit them all in. If we were speaking about the present, I would have to give a BIG shout out to two very different people. One would be Matthew Morrison (the teacher of the Glee class on television). The other would have to be Dean Koontz - my absolute favorite writer (of this century). When it comes to Mr. Morrison, I would like to have breakfast. I have a feeling, over coffee, I would be speaking with an extremely intelligent person. From the Broadway stage to the movies and television, his entertainment factor is well above par. But, I can see by the look in those eyes that he would be intriguing to talk to about sports, history, politics - a great many things, in fact. We would have that pot of coffee and enjoy a tango (The dance, people! To work off all the caffeine!) before we said adieu.

When it comes to lunch, I pick Koontz. Still one of the greatest moments was a letter I received from this amazing writer who let me know that a story I had written to him in a fan letter, of all things, made him laugh so hard he fell out of his chair. Can you imagine how cool it is to know that you made Dean Koontz laugh? I would love to talk about everything from dogs to Odd Thomas to the need for sarcasm and wit - which I still believe is missing in this day and age. I would love to pick his literary brain. Now THAT would be a great lunch!

And for dinner, we reach out to the past. I certainly do not wish this to come out as creepy even though I know it will. Although I would love to meet many historical figures - from Houdini to Lincoln to Jane Austen - I have to give the ‘shout-out’ here to Poe. Even now, his words have a symmetry that have yet to be copied. His stories were frightening and seductive all at the same time. I would wonder how he would feel if he was still alive knowing that The Masque of the Red Death has basically come true, when you see all the pride and prejudice (not to use a line from another writer I am in love with) that seems to be a daily occurrence on our television sets.

So from a tango (yes, the dance) with Morrison to a lunch with Koontz, I would love to end the evening with a vodka (or whatever was his poison) with Poe!  THAT would be a perfect day!

Until Next Time, Everybody,
Amy

Unresisting by Shane Morgan

Seventeen year old Natasha Johnson is having a rough year. Her twin brother, Sean, died last summer after a car crash, and her parents decided to pack up and leave the only home she’d known all her life. It's a lot to take in, and Nat has decidedly given up on the world, until moving to Stetson Valley and meeting high school ‘outcast’, Chace Owens.

Chace's dark and mysterious aura is not exactly seen as 'normal', but Nat already knows that not a lot of things are of the norm when it comes to her life. She soon finds herself unable to resist Chace's strange pull on her heart, unleashing a sudden attraction to the unnatural forces that have always been burning within her. But with uncovering her true self brings forth great danger, as Nat learns that her brother's death had a lot more to do with the side she's unable to resist.

Can Natasha calm the blazing flames and withstand the threat of danger, or will this new found power destroy her?

My Thoughts:

I like the idea of this story.  I haven't read anything like it.  I really enjoyed the twists and turns as well.  My heart went out to Natasha over the loss of her brother.   I did feel like the story was a bit rushed and didn't have time to really know the characters.  I think if those issues were addressed I would understand more where the characters were coming from in their actions.
