Review: Jack Templar and The Lord of the Vampires by Jeff Gunhus

Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires
Jack is back. After his adventures at the Monster Hunter Academy (which included fighting a goblin army, befriending an ancient werewolf, and battling two fire breathing dragons), Jack Templar was hoping for a rest. No such luck. In Book #3 of the Jack Templar Monster Hunter series, Jack embarks on a quest to track down and acquire the first of the five mythical Jerusalem Stones, an ancient power found by his ancestors the Templar Knights. Only the reunited Stones can stop Ren Lucre, the Dark Lord who holds Jack’s father hostage and prepares for an all-out war against an unsuspecting human world. But each Stone is held by a different Creach Lord and recovering them will not be easy. Jack and his friends begin their quest by seeking out one of the most powerful and dangerous keepers of the Stones, the Lord of the Vampires. The fate of the world rests on Jack’s shoulders and he will be tested like never before. But true monster hunters always do their duty…come what may. Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires.

My Thoughts:
With every book in this series I fall more in love with Jack and his cohorts.  This book is packed with some really cool scenes taking place in the beautiful city of Paris.  The descriptions were vivid and I could see how gorgeous everything was through the characters' eyes.  Jack, along with Eva, Daniel, Will, T-Rex & Xavier don't seem to get more than a moment's peace between each life or death situation.  Every one made my heart stop.  Just like Jack, there were several moments when I thought "This is it.  They can't get out of this one."  Yet, they would make it through much to my relief.  Jack learns so much about himself, the history of the Black Watch and even some of the Creach's history in this book.  With all that's learned, I know there is that much more to come in the next books.  I can't wait!!  If you're a fan of Rick Riordan then add this series to your list.  I'm not comparing or saying this series is like any of Riordan's, I'm just saying it's just as good and you'll love it!  It's unique and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Suitable for ages 11 & up.  Mild language and moderate violence.
Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy (Book 2) After barely surviving the onslaught of monsters that tried to kill him the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack Templar leaves his hometown on a quest to rescue his father and discover the truth about his past. Joined by his friends Will and T-Rex, and led by Eva, the mysterious one-handed monster hunter, Jack sets out for the Monster Hunter Academy where he hopes to find answers to his questions. Little does he suspect that the Academy is filled with dangers of its own, many of them more terrifying than anything he’s faced so far.
Jack Templar: Monster Hunter (Book 1) Orphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack's fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it's great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend "T-Rex" from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he's the descendent of a long line of monster hunters and he's destined to be in the family business. Second, that there's a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits...until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him. As if that weren't enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the "One?" Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.
Jack Templar Monster Hunter was chosen as a Book of the Year Finalist by Foreword Reviews.
Author Jeff Gunhus Jeff Gunhus grew up in Cyprus, Greece, and Saudi Arabia where there was a distinct lack of television. He quickly found books were the gateway to incredible adventures, fascinating characters and unbelievable discoveries. Now, with five children of his own (all who watch too much television, in his opinion), he has enjoyed revisiting his old books and reliving those adventures all over again.

Review: The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa

Cover & description from goodreads.com

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

My Thoughts:
Let's start with the cover.  My favorite cover in The Iron Fey series was The Iron Knight.  So no surprise that I LOVED this cover as well.  It captures perfectly the other-worldly beauty of the Fey.  As with all her books, Kagawa rights the most lovable and hate-able characters.  I don't feel the need to go on about how brilliantly written this book is because that is just a given when reading one of her books.  The story picks off just days after The Lost Prince ended.  Ethan and Keirran's lives become more entangled as they try to save Keirran's Annwyl from The Fade.  This book has a darker tone than The Lost Prince.  It broke my heart as Keirran made drastic choices that effected everyone he loved.  I look forward to seeing what develops of Ethan's teacher Guro and what secrets he's hiding.  With the appearance of Puck, the mood is lightened and I loved having him back in the game.  But it's that last page, last paragraph, last sentence that had me audibly gasping.  Oh the torture!!  Now I have to wait, what feels like an eternity, to read the next book in this outstanding series!
This book was received through NetGalley from the publisher for my honest review.

BLURB

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

Review: Inferno by Sherrilyn Kenyon - Book 4 in Chronicles of Nick

Image & Description from goodreads.com

Nick has his driver’s license and he’s not afraid to use it. But turning sixteen isn't what he thought it would be. While other boys his age are worried about prom dates and applying for college, Nick is neck deep in enemies out to stop him from living another day. No longer sure if he can trust anyone, his only ally seems to be the one person he’s been told will ultimately kill him.

But life spent serving the undead is anything except ordinary. And those out to get him have summoned an ancient force so powerful even the gods fear it. As Nick learns to command and control the elements, the one he must master in order to combat his latest foe is the one most likely to destroy him. As the old proverb goes, fire knows nothing of mercy, and if Nick is to survive this latest round, he will have to sacrifice a part of himself. However, the best sacrifice is seldom the sanest move. Sometimes it’s the one that leaves your enemies confused, and you even more so.

And sometimes, you have to trust your enemy to save your friends. But what do you do when that enemy is you?

My Thoughts:

I'm not going to gush about how great this book is (of course it is).  But this is the fourth book in the series so it stands to reason that I enjoy reading them since I've stuck to it.  Here's what I loved about the changes in the story.  I love the way Nick is evolving.  He's growing up at a realistic pace.  Just like all adolescents he's figuring out who he wants to be and what that means for his future.  He still has insecurities and questions every decision he makes, but he's maturing and gaining confidence.  Loyalties shift in this book as several characters start to re-evaluate what side they should be on.  I have loved this series from the first book.  You know I'm dying for the next one.  I've never read any of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series but they're in my near future.

You will get with this book: mild language, cliff hanger ending, non-stop action and realistic teenage angst.
